Real Housewives of Orange County star Kelly Dodd recently took to Instagram to “clarify” the comments she made over the holiday weekend about the COVID-19 virus in the OC. On Monday, Dodd was excited about going to a restaurant and seeing people shopping after two months of lockdown. But, when she exaggerated the low death toll in the area and said she loved that no one was wearing masks, she ended up getting some push back from both the media and fans.

“Yay, we get to finally have a meal out,” Dodd said on her Instagram Stories. “Yay, no one is wearing a mask. I love it. Yay!”

When she got inside the restaurant, the Bravolebrity reiterated that “No one is wearing masks here in Orange County” and then she explained that it was “because nobody is dying here of the virus.”

This latest comment led to Page Six pointing out that the death toll in Orange County, California, due to COVID-19 was 130 as of Monday. Once she was called out for her exaggeration, Dodd responded with a clarification.

“I was by no means minimizing deaths that have been caused by this virus, and I feel for their loved ones,” said Dodd. “However, Orange County has 133 deaths out of 3 million people — much lower than most.”

Throughout the novel coronavirus pandemic, Dodd has made her beliefs clear that she values personal freedom over government’s attempts to mitigate the spread of the virus. She shared a quote on Instagram that said it isn’t the government’s job to protect her health. Instead, she believes it’s the government’s job to protect her rights, and it’s her job to protect her health.

“When you trade liberty for safety, you end up losing both,” said Dodd.

She also found herself in some hot water at the beginning of the outbreak when she said that the virus was God’s way of “thinning the herd.” She eventually apologized for that remark. Dodd has also come under fire by some for comparing the coronavirus to the flu, saying that “people are going to die.”

As for Kelly Dodd’s latest remarks during the holiday, she says she was feeling encouraged and excited that people were out and about, and that there was a semblance of normalcy. She also clarified that she was wearing a mask before eating her meal after Us Weekly accused her of not wearing a mask.

“I was wearing a mask,” Dodd said when reviewing the clip she shared. “This lady right here was not wearing the mask, and no patrons when we were eating were wearing the mask. The servers were, but you can’t eat with a mask on, so get your facts straight.”
