Actor Rob Lowe  (Code Black, The Grinder, Brothers and Sisters) was slammed on Twitter after posting a tweet that joked about Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Warren announced she was running for president in 2020 and Rob Lowe tweeted a joke playing off her claims of being Native American and the presidency.

In a now-deleted tweet, Rob Lowe wrote the following.

“Elizabeth Warren would bring a whole new meaning to Commander in “Chief.”

Though some found the joke humorous, others didn’t. Many in Hollywood have expressed difficulty making their opinions known or even cracking jokes about politics if it steers away from liberal or Democratic viewpoints. Things have become increasingly tense between the right and the left under President Trump’s administration.

After Lowe shared the Tweet the Internet went crazy prompting Lowe to delete the tweet and offer an explanation.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and known Democrats and liberals fired back at Lowe. Vincent D’Onofrio (Law and Order: Criminal Intent, The Cell, Men in Black) responded that the remark wasn’t funny.

Star Wars legend Mark Hamill responded with the comment, “What a raw blow.”

Valerie Bertinelli, star from the 70s sitcom One Day at a Time and Hot in Cleveland, responded with, “Don’t. Jesus.”

What do you think of Rob Lowe’s original tweet? Did you find it offensive or funny? Do you think Twitter had a meltdown for no reason? Did they overreact?

The political climate is extremely tense and it could be said that the Trump administration has resulted in many people becoming hypersensitive. As the nation continues to draw nearer to 2020 it is expected controversy and more social media fights will continue.

Rob Lowe is an avid social media user. He has been known to live tweet during his movie and television premieres and readily responds to fans when they comment.

Though he is very interactive he appears to be more sensitive to controversy and respectful of other’s feelings: whether he agrees or disagrees.

He shared another message following the announcement he deleted the tweet. In it, he reminded people to laugh.

“Observation: many polarizing politicians actually LIKE each other, privately help each other, then publicly stir the pot, playing for votes. That’s fine. Only thing wrong with it is when we buy it whole cloth, breeding intolerance, anger and total inability to laugh at ANYTHING.”
