Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Announces 2020 Inductees And Twitter Isn't Happy

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced their inductees for 2020. Joining one of the most exclusive clubs in music this year is Whitney Houston, the Notorious B.I.G., Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, and T. Rex.

According to the New York Post, Houston had been eligible for induction since 2010, but to the shock and surprise of many fans, she didn’t receive her first nomination until this year. Some of the other inductees were also first-time nominees, including the Doobie Brothers – who had been eligible since 1996 – Notorious B.I.G., who was first eligible to be nominated in 2019, and T. Rex, who were first eligible in 1993.

This was the third nomination for both Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails.

The Hall of Fame announced their group of 16 nominees last October. Those who didn’t make the cut this year were Pat Benatar, Dave Matthews Band, Judas Priest, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Soundgarden, Thin Lizzy, MC5, Kraftwerk, Motorhead, and Todd Rundgren.

The nominating committee chose 15 nominees, and the ballots were distributed to more than 600 historians, members of the music industry, artists, and all living inductees. Fans also had the chance to vote online, and the artist who won the fan vote received one additional vote in the overall process.

The reaction on Twitter to this year’s list of inductees was mostly negative. While people were generally happy that Houston finally got the recognition she deserves, many were unhappy about most of the inductees being chosen over other artists. Others complained about rap and R&B artists being inducted in the Hall of Fame over rock artists.

Most of the outrage was over the snub of Benatar because of her significance in rock music history. Benatar’s You Better Run was the first video by a female rock artist played on MTV back in 1981.

Fans are also unhappy about Dave Matthews Band not making the cut because they received over one million votes from fans, making them the winner of the fan vote.

“You can’t say the fans will have a say in who gets in and ignore that say when the time comes. Dave Matthews Band got the most fan votes and they STILL aren’t in?” One People’s Project executive director Daryle Lamont Jenkins tweeted.

The inductees will officially take their place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony that will be held at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland on May 2nd.
