Saturday Night Live is no stranger to using current headlines for sketches in their show. The ongoing Jussie Smollett scandal was no exception. However, some critics think the NBC show went too far this time.
Sandra Oh hosted the show, but Smollett’s innocence is all people are talking about today. The skit featured a twist on what a potential meeting between the actor and Fox executives would look like today after all charges against him were dropped. It was undoubtedly meant to be funny but social media is split on whether or not SNL crossed a line.
Chris Redd plays the Empire star in the sketch and Oh plays his manager, trying her hardest to save the actors career. The hilarious Kate McKinnon and Mikey Day represent the Fox executives, while Lee Daniels, the creator of Empire, is portrayed by the usually funny Kenan Thompson. However, instead of creating laughs the comedians got more annoying as the skit played out.

The premise makes Smollett look like a guy who doesn’t care about his future on Empire. Reid, as the disgraced actor, shows up two hours late for the critical meeting wearing a MAGNA hat. His manager, Oh, keeps insisting her client is a victim of a hate crime.
“Guys, you are not going to believe what just happened to me. I got attacked again!” Reid exclaims as he attempts to explain his delay when the sketch begins.
Then Reid promptly digs through a shopping bag which includes Crest White Strips, the letters KKK and a Teletubby.
“The killer left me a bunch of clues!” Reid further shares.
The sketch continues to play out as though another attack occurred, clearing making fun of not only the dropped charges to the alleged hate crime as well the actor himself. Social media was quick to explode in response to the SNL skit.
“Not impressed by the @SNL skit about Jussie Smollett. In my opinion, it was in bad taste,” shared @lisa_lisab7426.
“The Jussie Smollet skit was cringeworthy! Not really funny,” wrote @bookangel224
Not everyone hated the sketch though. Some social media users found it funny, which is why people are divided as to whether or not SNL went too far.
“This Jussie Smollett skit is hilarious!!!” Tweeted @TerpGrad01
“lmaoooo @ this SNL Jussie skit” replied @MrGChristopher
