'Saved By The Bell' Reboot Officially Part Of New NBC Streaming Service

NBC Universal is jumping into the streaming wars and on board the 90s nostalgia train at the exact same time, as they have announced that a Saved By The Bell reboot will be part of their new streaming service Peacock, which will launch next spring. Rumors of a reboot have been swirling for about a year, and NBC just confirmed the show’s return with a press release revealing that at least two original stars will be part of the revival.

Both Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (AC Slater) have signed on to star in and produce the new series. Currently, Mark Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris) is attached to the new ABC show Mixed-ish, so he did not appear in the new show’s credits. But, NBC’s official description of the new SBTB makes it clear that the Zack Morris character will be part of the new project even though Gosselaar isn’t available.

Of course, the big question is how will they bring back a show about high school kids in the early 90s. BH90210 has already conquered the meta-angle, with the original stars playing heightened versions of themselves attempting to reboot their classic teen drama.

According to the NBC press release, the new Saved By The Bell is sticking with their cheesy-yet-beloved sitcom approach with a modern twist. Apparently, Zack Morris is now the governor of California, and he has run into some political trouble over “closing too many low-income high schools.” This leads to him sending students from those closed schools “to the highest-performing schools in the state, including Bayside High.”

“The influx of new students gives the overprivileged Bayside kids a much-needed and hilarious dose of reality,” reads the press release.

According to Vulture, NBC has brought on Great News creator and 30 Rock writer Tracey Wigfield as showrunner, and original show producers Peter Engel and Franco Bario will be returning as executive producers. Only Berkley and Lopez are confirmed to be part of the reboot, but insiders say that NBC is in talks with other actors from the series about being part of the project.

It’s not clear yet if Tiffani Amber Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski), Dustin Diamond (Samuel “Screech” Powers), Lark Voorhies (Lisa Turtle), or Dennis Haskins (Mr. Belding) will reprise their roles.

In addition to the Saved By The Bell reboot, Peacock will also feature the revival of the 1980s sitcom Punky Brewster with original star Soleil Moon Frye.

Peacock will officially launch in April 2020.
