Shania Twain was one of the biggest country music superstars on the planet in the 1990s. But when she was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2003, everything changed. The singer had to undergo numerous open-throat surgeries to recover from the tick-borne illness, and she says that the process was devastating.

In a new interview with Willie Geist for Sunday Today, Twain discussed her disease, the recovery process, and the break she took in 2015 to deal with the problems she had with her vocal cords.

“It was devastating,” says Twain. “I was very, very sad about it to the point where I just — I felt I had no other choice but to accept it — and that I would never sing again. I was mourning the expression of my voice.”

It took the 54-year-old years to recover, and she finally returned to music in 2017. She says that her voice will never be like it was before and it has a new gravely tone, but she’s accepting the changes.

“It was little by little because the surgery is invasive,” explained Twain. “It’s given me more room to play, to be honest. I think it’s kind of sexy.”

She says that she will never have her own voice again and she’s okay with that. Now she has found a new voice and she likes it.

Twain recently told People magazine that it would have killed her to not be able to sing again. But, she wasn’t going to let her life be over if that would have happened. Still, she admits that she would have been very sad about the end of her singing career and would have mourned the loss of her voice forever.

Twain is back in the studio and on stage again because music is her great love and passion. She says what got her back on stage is the fact that she could, and now she has more appreciation for it than ever before.
