Shannen Doherty Gets Candid About Accepting Her Body After Breast Cancer

Shannen Doherty is getting candid about learning to accept her body after her breast cancer battle.

The 48-year-old opened up to People magazine regarding being in remission, as well as life on the other side of her cancer fight. It was a terrifying and painful battle for Doherty. Now the actress has shared recovery is a daily process.

“I don’t think you’re ever on the other side of cancer. I don’t think about the fact that I’m in remission. I look at it like I’m lucky to be alive every minute, every second of the day,” Doherty expressed.

March 2015 is when the BH90210 star’s life changed forever. Immediately after learning she had breast cancer, Doherty underwent hormone therapy before deciding to have a mastectomy. Back to back rounds of chemotherapy and radiation waited for the actress after her surgery.

“I really took good care of myself, and I came out of it in as good of condition I think somebody [in my situation] could be in. But the funny thing with cancer is that once you’re no longer on chemo or radiation, people think you’re fine, that you bounce back. But what they don’t realize is that your body has been through something so incredibly difficult that your body never fully bounces back,” she shared.

The long hours on the set of the new Fox series have taken a toll on Doherty. It has made her realize she is struggling with accepting her body after cancer. She has learned she must be kinder to herself and her body.

“I’m trying to figure out how to accept who I am now. I’m never going to be the size I used to be. Some of my meds that I’m on keep zapping the collagen out of me, so I’m never going to have a wrinkle-free face. I’m critical of myself. But there are some things you can’t fight. Ultimately, I’m trying to be kinder to myself. And I try to live each day as an amazing, precious gift that I’ve been given,” Doherty admitted.

Life has certainly changed for BH90210 star Shannen Doherty since her battle with breast cancer. Even though she is considered to be in remission, it is a battle she still fights today. Learning how to take care of herself, as well as embrace the gift of life Doherty has been given is not always easy for the stubborn actress.
