There are some people who are taking Mendes’ comments of finding the accusations hurtful as saying he thinks being called gay is a slur. He repeatedly explains that isn’t what he means and says there is nothing wrong with being gay.

Forcing someone to question their sexual identity is never the right thing to do and is always an invasion of privacy. There are many children who have grown up with that type of bullying and harassment. Maybe a boy put on his sister’s shoes or didn’t throw a football the correct way and endured years of harassment from others questioning his sexual identity.

The same happens to women. There are many young girls who were more tomboyish, preferred wearing pants to dresses, and would have rather hung out in the garage with dad then bake cookies with mom. In turn, their sexuality is questioned then turned into a weapon used to bully and torment.

Someone’s sexuality should never be turned into a tool or weapon for harassment. Shawn Mendes repeatedly tells the public that he is being harassed for his sexuality and it is causing him pain.

Shawn Mendes explained in an interview with the Guardian.

“For me it’s hurtful. I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have and how that must affect them.”

As the United States continues to grow more tolerant and many people strive to become accepting of all people whether straight, lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, or queer (LGBT) it’s important for people to listen and hear when others say they are hurting.

It’s also known that trying to force people into any label or sexual identity is a form of harassment. It is up to each individual to discover their own sexual identity and then choose how they feel comfortable with that identity.

Shawn Mendes can take comfort in knowing he isn’t the only celebrity to go through this. Oprah Winfrey has been accused of being a closeted lesbian with Gayle King for years even though she and partner Stedman Graham say they entered a spiritual union instead of a traditional marriage together.

Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham reportedly entered their union in 1992 and 27 years later, Oprah is still accused of being a lesbian.

If Shawn Mendes were gay (which he adamantly says he isn’t) this type of harassment is dangerous in another way. Not only does this type of bullying cause people to be less confident in their true sexual identity, but it can cause people who may be in the closet and not ready to come out to become anxious, depressed, and even suicidal.
