Spike Lee has finally won his first Academy Award. The writer and director’s film BlacKkKlansman took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was a moment Lee had been waiting years for, and he did not hold back in his reaction or acceptance speech. In fact, his speech has gained a lot of attention, with social media still buzzing about it today.

Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson delivered the good news to Lee, as well as Kevin Willmott, Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz who worked on the screenplay too. However, all eyes were on Lee now that his losing streak at the Oscars was finally broken. He had been nominated five times, over three decades, before finally taking home the award last night.

Once everyone was on stage, Lee jumped into Jackson’s arms, then wasted no time getting down to the business of accepting the award. He was so passionate that his words were immediately bleeped out, leaving viewers at home wondering what was said. It turns out the famous director used an expletive word to make it clear he was going to talk as long as he wanted.

The speech began with the Jungle Fever writer discussing the history of slavery, including his family’s experience in it. He shared the story of his grandmother, who would save money each week for his education. She referred to him as Spikey-poo, and he revealed she is the one who put him through film school. It was a passionate tribute to a woman he dearly loved.

After giving a shout out to his family, as well as the ancestors who built our country, Lee spoke candidly about what he feels needs to happen in the 2020 presidential election.

“The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilize. Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate,” he stated firmly and passionately.

Spike Lee’s first Oscar winner speech earned him a standing ovation by his colleagues. The entire Dolby Theater erupted with applause for the man who has long deserved to win an Academy Award.  It may not have been the Best Picture nod that Lee was hoping for, but it is truly an incredible honor.
