Amid the Black Lives Matter protests all over the world, Taylor Swift addressed the problem of still having statues of ‘racist historical figures’ in America, especially in her home state! That being said, the superstar called for all of them to be taken down!
As you might know, there is even a ‘white supremacist newspaper editor’ and Ku Klux Klan’s first grand wizard, immortalized in Taylor’s state of Tennessee and the singer made it very clear that it just disgusts her to know that is the case!
After all, Taylor, who has proven to be a great ally for the black community, stressed that she wants everyone in her state to feel safe, not only the white people.
These were the general ideas that Swift expressed on Twitter as well as on her IG account earlier today.
Her powerful and eloquently written message was accompanied by a call for the Capitol Commission and Tennessee Historical Commission to get rid of all the statues representing people known for their ‘racist values.’
She wrote in part: ‘As a Tennessean, it makes me sick that there are monuments in our state that celebrate racist historical people who did evil things. Taking down statues is not going to fix centuries of systemic oppression, of violence and hatred black people have had to endure but it just might bring us one step closer to making ALL Tennesseans and visitors of our state feel safe.’
‘We need to retroactively change the status of people who perpetuated hideous patterns of racism from ‘heroes’ to ‘villains.’ And villains don’t deserve statues,’ she went on to argue.
As you may know, some people have been insisting that the statues are there as a way for people to learn their history but there are definitely better ways for that to happen rather than statues who are usually meant to commemorate and honor iconic historical figures.
