Early Monday morning, June 17, 2019, Taylor Swift dropped the official video for her new single “You Need to Calm Down.” It is the second single released from her upcoming album Lover and it featured over 20 celebrity cameos. The song is about LGBTQ pride, therefore, making its release during June perfect as June is national Pride month. The song’s lyrics slam those who are full of hate toward the LGBTQ community and basically rebukes them for not leaving the gay community alone to let them live in peace.
The video is a visual feast for the eyes full of cotton candy pinks, sparkly rainbow hues, and a pastel-colored trailer park that looks like it dropped out of the land of Oz. The anti-Gay protesters are the only non-colorful things in the video and a collection of drab, toothless people are depicted as those who fight against gay marriage and gay rights.
Some of the song’s lyrics include the following.
“You are somebody that we don’t know
But you’re comin’ at my friends like a missile
Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD? (You could be GLAAD)
Sunshine on the street at the parade
But you would rather be in the dark ages
Makin’ that sign must’ve taken all night.
You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace
And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate
‘Cause shade never made anybody less gay.”
The celebrities featured in the video for “You Need to Calm Down” are those who are either members of the LGBTQ community or are vocal supporters of it.
Celebrity cameos include the following: Laverne Cox, Adam Lambert, Ellen DeGeneres, Ryan Reynolds, Karamo Brown, Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, RuPaul, Ciara, Billy Porter, Katy Perry, Hannah Hart, Todrick Hall, Hayley Kiyoko, Adam Rippon, Tan France, Dexter Mayfield, Chester Lockhart, Justin Mikita, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Antoni Porowski.
