Taylor Swift Hits Number 1 On YouTube With LGBTQ Anthem You Need To Calm Down

Taylor Swift’s new song “You Need to Calm Down” has hit the number one spot on YouTube in less than 24 hours. The official video (and second single release from her upcoming album Lover) has more than 20 million views, over 1.5 million likes, and 87 thousand dislikes. The song is an anthem for the LGBTQ community, is full of celebrity cameos, and ends with Taylor Swift urging voters to support her Change.org petition for the equality act. Now that the song has topped the YouTube trending charts, fans expect it will slide into the Billboard charts as well.

The song encourages people to focus more on minding their own business rather than shouting in protest over people who live lifestyles they disagree with or even hate. There is one notable lyric change in the song where Taylor sings, “Why are you mad, when you can be GLAAD,” using the name of the LGBTQ rights organization Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation instead of the word glad.

Those lyrics seem to have resonated with the listener as well as when Taylor pointed out that people are born gay and that you can’t change someone’s sexual preference regardless of how hard you try. She included the lyrics, “Cause shade never made anybody less gay,” and these have gone viral with people quoting them on social media outlets.

Another part of the video that isn’t a lyric in the song that has sparked a spike in Internet searches is the picture hanging on the wall of Taylor’s trailer that reads, “Mom, I am a rich man.”

The quote came from a 1996 interview between Cher and Jane Pauley where Cher’s mom had encouraged her to marry a rich man. Cher’s answer to her mother was that she was a rich man.
