Martin Scorsese, before the release of The Irishman, urged people to go see the movie in theaters, however, as it turns out, most viewers preferred to see it on Netflix from the comfort of their own home. The Los Angeles Times reported that the movie brought in an audience of 13.2 million in the United States over Thanksgiving weekend.

Data provided by Nielsen revealed the $160 million film, released on the 27th of November – one day before Thanksgiving – was a huge hit for Mr. Scorsese and Netflix. The movie starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Joe Pesci among others.

The movie explored the death of Jimmy Hoffa, portrayed by Mr. Pacino, in addition to organized crime during the 1950s and 1960s America. On the first day of its release, the movie brought in around 3.9 million viewers, 20% of who were men from the age of 50-years-old to 64-years-old.

Reportedly, only around 18% of the viewers watched the entire thing from start to finish, which was on par with Netflix’s other hit movie, Bird Box. Bird Box, thus far, has been one of Netflix’s most successful productions, earning around 16.9 million viewers.

Since the movie was released, The Irishman has gone up for several awards including from the American Film Institute, the National Board of Review, as well as the New York Film Critics Circle. As usual, Netflix didn’t reveal how much money the movie actually made.

According to Nielsen, had Netflix charged $9 per ticket in a theater, the movie would’ve made approximately $120 million at domestic box offices. However, less than 20% of people who watched the movie viewed it until the end, at least in the first sitting.

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, however, thus far, many viewers on social media complained about the movie’s length. Coming in at 3 hours and 29 minutes, the movie was definitely one of the longest in recent years.
