The Sopranos Creator David Chase Shocks Fans By Revealing Tony Soprano's Fate After Cliffhanger Finale

The series finale of The Sopranos is one of the most frustrating in the history of television. While fans have long debated Tony Soprano’s (James Gandolfini) fate in the final scene, series creator David Chase just revealed what really happened after the screen went black.

The final moments show Tony Soprano eating dinner with his family when a stranger arrives to kill him. But before the hitman reaches Tony, the screen goes completely black. Ten seconds later, the credits start rolling.

With the show celebrating its 20th anniversary, Chase finally opened up about the mysterious ending. According to Daily Mail, Chase confirmed that Tony was killed in the finale, officially ending years of debate.

The revelations were part of a new book from Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz, called The Sopranos Sessions. Chase told the authors that he planned Tony’s death two years in advance but had a different final scene in mind.

Chase originally wanted Tony to meet Johnny Sack in New York for the show’s ending. As Tony walked through the Lincoln Tunnel to meet the mobster, the screen would fade to black, leaving fans wondering what went down.

“It was going to go black there and you never saw him again as he was heading back, the theory being that something bad happens to him at the meeting,” Chase explained. “Be we didn’t do that.”

Before his passing in 2013, Gandolfini opened up about his thoughts on Tony’s final scene. The actor admitted that he did not like the idea at first and felt as if Tony deserved a better exit. But after sleeping on it for a night, Gandolfini realized that the ending was perfect.

The revelations came amid celebrations of the show’s 20th anniversary. Chase joined a slew of Soprano alums for the event, which took place at the SVA Theater in New York. Cast members included the likes of Edie Falco, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Robert Iler, Micahel Imperioli, Lorraine Bracco and Vincent Curatola.

Gandolfini’s 19-year-old son, Michael Gandolfini, also made an appearance at The Sopranos event.
