Tori Spelling Admits She Still Doesn't Get Along With Shannon Doherty Ahead Of 90210 Reboot

With Beverly Hills 90210 coming back to television this week in a unique reboot, the original cast members are starting to talk publicly about the project and hinting at what fans can expect to see when the show returns. Tori Spelling (Donna Martin) recently opened up about all things 90210 – including her relationship with Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh) – during her husband Dean McDermott’s podcast Daddy Issues, and her story has changed about their history as castmates and friends.

Back in 1994, Doherty left the show after the fourth season amid rumors that she was difficult to work with and she didn’t get along with her co-stars, especially Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. Since Doherty’s infamous exit from the show, Spelling has claimed that Doherty got into a backstage fight with Garth, and Spelling also claimed she went to her dad, the late Aaron Spelling, in an effort to get Doherty fired.

Now, Spelling says that she and Doherty were best friends during their time on 90210, and despite claims from the press that there was a feud or rivalry between them, that simply wasn’t true.

Spelling does admit that she and Doherty are no longer close, but there is no specific reason for it. She added that Doherty is great and an “awesome person.”

Both Doherty and Spelling will join Jason Priestley (Brandon Walsh), Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders), Brian Austin Green (David Silver), and Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea Zuckerman) in the upcoming reboot, which Spelling says will be something fans have never seen before.

“It’s not a straight reboot, it’s kind of a dramedy and everyone plays a heightened version of themselves,” Spelling told The Hit Network’s Grant, Ed, & Ash. “It’s the first time an entire cast has ever played a version of themselves, and it’s getting us back on camera to do the straight reboot. So, it’s kind of a show within a show.”

Spelling explained that when she and Garth came up with the idea for a reboot a couple of years ago, not everyone was on board because they could never live up to the original. However, everyone immediately agreed to be a part of the project once it turned into a comedy with a fresh take.

The mom-of-five says that the cast wanted to poke fun at the public perception of them, as well as the way the media reports stories about them. Spelling also revealed that she is taking over her dad’s role as producer of the reboot, and she is the one who attempts to get everyone back together again.

The Beverly Hills 90210 reboot premieres August 7th on Fox.
