Weezer Releases Brand New Album Of Covers Following Their Massive Tribute "Africa"

Weezer has been around since the early 1990s, and surprisingly, the band just scored their first hit song in over ten years with their cover of the 1981 hit, “Africa.” It’s their highest charting song in almost a decade, and to add to that, the band just released a new record consisting entirely of cover tracks.

Known for hits like “Hash Pipe,” “Island In The Sun,” “Beverly Hills,” and “Pork and Beans,” Weezer just dropped their record, The Teal Album, named in accordance with their tendency to title albums after colors. The new record contains a number of cover songs like “Billie Jean,” “Stand By Me,” “Paranoid,” and “Sweet Dreams.”

However, one song to draw the most attention from the band is TLC’s “No Scrubs.” In fact, people on Twitter are loving Weezer’s take on the hit track, mostly due to its originality and peculiarity.

Some people have suggested they got the idea from the Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell hit, The Other Guys, in which Michael Keaton quotes various TLC songs throughout the movie.

In a tweet you can see above, however, one person wasn’t pleased with their cover of it. Some users even went so far as to accuse the band of “cultural appropriation,” due to the fact they chose to cover songs made, originally, by people of color.

Weezer is currently up for an award for their latest effort, Pacific Day Dream. Their new record features tracks like, “Feels Like Summer,” “Happy Hour,” and “Mexican Fender.” Whether or not they’re guilty of appropriation or not, one thing is clear: Weezer knows how to stay relevant.

Music critics like Anthony Fantano, for instance, have praised Weezer’s ability to stay relevant, unlike their 1990s contemporaries who have since faded away into a music scene which has increasingly become dominated by Hip-Hop, R & B, and EDM.

Other stars up for a Grammy Award includes Drake, Cardi B, Childish Gambino, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Kendrick Lamar and SZA, and Post-Malone.
