Meghan Markle’s lavish baby shower made headlines this week, but one person missing from the guest list was the Duchess of Sussex’s royal counterpart, Kate Middleton. Kensington Palace has yet to comment on the party, but there may have been a good reason why Middleton skipped the celebration.
Most members of the royal family do not have baby showers because it is against protocol. Victoria Arbiter, an expert in the royal family, explained how baby showers are considered “highly inappropriate” for the royals because they are obviously wealthy and can purchase anything they want.

Royal protocol did not stop Markle from enjoying an expensive baby shower with her close friends in New York. The event took place at The Mark hotel in the Upper East Side, and the guest list featured an elite group of individuals, including Serena Williams, Amal Clooney, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Mulroney, Misha Nonoo, Abigail Spencer and Sarah Rafferty.
While Markle partied it up in the Big Apple, Middleton was enjoying some precious family time with Prince William and the couple’s three children. According to Fox News, Middleton and William went on a ski trip this week and likely visited their favorite resort in France: Courchevel.
Although royal protocol may have been the biggest reason why Middleton did not attend the baby shower, she may have missed it simply because she and Markle are not good friends. After all, Markle and Prince Harry skipped out on Kate Middleton’s birthday bash in January, adding more fuel to the rumors that the couples are still feuding.
Insiders have denied the feud rumors and insist that Markle’s trip to New York offered her time to catch up with some old friends, many of whom she will not see until after the baby is born.

“The trip is a lovely chance to catch up with friends and spend time in a city she loves,” one source noted. “This will be the last time a lot of them will see Meg until after the baby is born so it’s nice to share precious moments.”
Meghan Markle and Harry are expected to welcome their first sometime in early April.
