Why R. Kelly Is Threatening To Sue Lifetime Over New Documentary

Kelly has faced a number of disturbing scandals over the years, and a new documentary from Lifetime is offering his victims a chance to tell their side of the story. With his tarnished reputation on the line, Kelly isn’t exactly thrilled about the documentary, which is why he is taking Lifetime to court.

According to The Hollywood Gossip, the new project explores the stories of Kelly’s victims and his reported sex cult. This includes sources who allegedly witnessed his underage relationship with Aaliyah.

The docuseries is six episodes in length and features stories from eight people who survived an encounter with the singer. The opening episode focuses on the story of Jovante Cunningham, who used to be a backup singer and first met Kelly at the young age of 14.

Cunningham claims that she saw Kelly pursue Aaliyah while they were on tour together. She even says that she caught them having sex on the tour bus. At the time, Aaliyah was only 15 years old while Kelly was 27.

“When the [room] door flew open on the bus, Robert was having sex with Aaliyah,” Cunningham shared. “Things an adult should not be doing with a child.”

Even more disturbing is the fact that Aaliyah and Kelly knew each other when she was only 12 years old.

Kelly’s old assistant, Demetrius Smith, also took part in the docuseries. Smith revealed that Kelly got Aaliyah pregnant when she was 15, which led to a secret underage marriage.

Smith says that they forged the marriage certificate and lied about Aaliyah’s age. Once they learned about the inappropriate nuptials, Aaliyah’s parents had the marriage annulled.

Kelly’s relationship with Aaliyah, who tragically passed in a plane wreck in 2001, was only the start of his troubles.

The singer was later accused of urinating on a 15-year-old girl in a leaked sex tape. He has also been busted for having child pornography, though none of the charges have ever stuck.

To be fair, Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton, recently stated that Cunningham is lying about the underage sex between her daughter and Kelly.
