Country music legend Willie Nelson has suffered some noticeable breathing issues lately during recent performances, most notably at last month’s CMA Awards when he performed a duet with Kacey Musgraves. And, while he has no plans to stop touring because of his health issues, he is making one major life change – he’s quit smoking cannabis.

If there is one thing that Nelson is known for other than his outlaw country music, it’s that he loves to smoke marijuana. Not only has he smoked it on the roof of the White House, but he has his own line of marijuana products. And, his personal stash is so “top shelf” that Toby Keith was inspired to write a song about it titled I’ll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again.

The 86-year-old Nelson told KSAT-TV in San Antonio, Texas, the reason behind his decision to quit smoking marijuana.

“I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days and I have to be careful,” explained Nelson. “I don’t smoke anymore — [I] take better care of myself.”

Nelson explained that the damage to his lungs isn’t just from smoking cannabis. He says he has mistreated himself since he was a kid when he started smoking cedar bark, and then went from that to cigarettes, which almost killed him. He added that just because rumors are swirling that he is close to death, he says he doesn’t care and he is glad to be here. Nelson then added with a smile that he is lucky to be here.

Nelson says that the key to staying healthy for him is to keep performing because it makes him happy and it gives him a major workout. He says he loves the bus and calls it “home,” and being on stage is an “energy exchange” because the crowd gives him a lot of positive energy, and he hopes to give them a lot of positive energy in return.

“For an hour they get away from everything they don’t like,” said Nelson.

As for cannabis use, it should be noted that Nelson said he stopped “smoking.” But, as users of the plant know there are other delivery methods, like edibles. Maybe now everyone will look forward to joining Nelson on his bus after a show for a delicious pan of brownies instead of burning one.
